Massive 2400mm flow meter ready for installation as SA water projects gain momentum

Endress+Hauser South Africa has delivered a ‘monster’ 2400mm magnetic flow meter to a large water utility to support its upgrade programme to better meet the future needs of consumers.

Hennie Pretorius, Industry Manager Water and Wastewater at Endress+Hauser South Africa,

describes the supply of the magnetic flow meter as a career highlight: “Supply of flowmeters this big is rare in South Africa and falls under a specialised scope of supply for manufacturers.  Not only did Endress+Hauser manage to manufacture this enormous flowmeter, but we also managed to clear the shipment, pressure test and deliver the product to the customer amid the constraints of lockdown,” he says. The customer will deploy the meter as part of a filter plant capacity upgrade.

Pretorius says the flow meter features Endress+Hauser Heartbeat technology, which allows for automated ongoing diagnostics and verification without process interruptions. It ensures a cost-efficient and safe plant operation. “Heartbeat verification, diagnostics and monitoring optimises operations, reduces interruptions and improves maintenance and service delivery across all industries in need of accurate flow measurement.

Endress+Hauser reports that while the team has been working remotely due to the lockdown, business is picking up as the water sector moves to catch up on delayed projects. “The new Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, appears to be fast-tracking projects that had stalled in recent years,” Pretorius says. “Suddenly we are seeing infrastructure upgrades being revived and new requests for proposals for water supply to rural areas.”

Endress+Hauser South Africa is set to showcase its advanced range of solutions, including all products featuring Heartbeat technology, at the next IFAT Africa trade show in Johannesburg next year. IFAT Africa, the leading trade fair for water, sewage, environmental technologies, refuse and recycling in Southern Africa, is presented by Messe Muenchen South Africa and will be co-located with food & drink technology Africa and analytica Lab Africa at the Gallagher Convention Centre from July 13 – 15, 2021.
